She was born Virginia Katherine McMath, but the world would come to know her—and love her—as Ginger Rogers: Broadway star, Academy Award-winning actress, and the ultimate on-screen dancing partner of the inimitable Fred Astaire. In Ginger: My Story, the legendary entertainer shares the triumphs of a remarkable career that began when she won a Texas dancing contest at age fourteen; the joys and heartbreaks of her five marriages; her relationships with some of Hollywood's major leading men, including Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and damaged daredevil billionaire Howard Hughes; and the strength of her religious convictions that got her through thick and thin.
Lavishly illustrated with rare photographs from the author's personal collection, Ginger is an enthralling, behind-the-scenes tour of Hollywood life during the Golden Age of movies by one of its most enduring stars.
love being an insiderReviewed by Jan Lincoln, 2009-08-03
I totally enjoy reading Ginger's words and being on the inside of her history. Imagine hearing her thoughts about meeting and dancing with Fred and so much more. I am just at the point where her career is really taking off and cannot wait to continue.
What a Life!Reviewed by Melissa Lynn Krchnak, 2009-07-09
She experienced so much at such a young age. If you're reading and find yourself not knowing some names, look them up. They're almost always just as exciting as Ginger herself.
Worth Reading If You Are A FanReviewed by Lanie, 2009-06-30
I read a lot of autobiographies.
This one stands out for the way it was written. She writes it in a
very easy style to read. Like she is just sitting down and telling
you a fun story. She includes a lot of personal feelings, and her
little stories about things that happened in both her personal
life, and in all her many career endeavors.
There are a few down sides to this book. There is a lot of
religious and Bible talk. She is very devout in her faith, and
seems to be trying to convert the reader. Also, there is not much
insight here on her part. She does not do any self reflection. She
seems to think quite a lot of herself, and wants the reader to
realize her importance too. There are not very many photos
either.
All in all, a good book to read if you are already a big fan of
Ginger. But, if not, you should probably skip it.
Ginger Rogers reviewReviewed by Ginger L. Cornwell, 2009-05-30
I havn't got to read the book yet but from the looks of it I'm sure I'm gonna like it.
What an Ego!Reviewed by Pioneer Woman, 2009-02-05
I love the Ginger Rogers-Fred Astaire movies, so I expected to love this book! The info is good, but the tone got old very fast. It seems that the biggest fan of Ginger Rogers is Ginger Rogers herself. And while I'm sure a big ego is mandatory for an entertainer, it makes this book a bit tedious.
